SHSAT Math
Skills Evaluation

2.5 hours (in-person; private instruction)

Cost: $200

Instructor: Christina A.

The purpose of this evaluation is to identify the student’s areas of strength and weakness on the math content assessed by the SHSAT.

Many students will discover specific holes in their knowledge; for example, a student might not yet have learned how to solve a multivariable equation, or might have never seen a box-and-whiskers plot.

Many students will also discover that they have gaps in their foundational knowledge, such as calculations with fractions. While this math may be “easier”, it can actually turn out to be a much more serious problem for scoring well on the SHSAT, because fractions are needed to solve SHSAT problems involving ratios, proportions, similar figures, probability, statistics, pie charts, percent, and more. Foundation problems are unfortunately very common among our current middle schoolers because their early educations were so disrupted by Covid.

Identifying these knowledge gaps is the first step in creating a concrete plan to increase your score on the SHSAT.

This evaluation is individualized to understand each student’s knowledge and process.

  1. This is an in-person, one-on-one session.

  2. Using a published practice test, the student will be asked to read each question aloud, and then explain their thought process while solving the problem.

  3. Teacher will observe and make notes on the student’s knowledge, computation skills, process methods, and speed for each problem.

  4. Teacher will prepare a report summarizing all of this information, learning goals, and next steps.

What happens after the evaluation?

Regardless of how well you did on these practice questions, all students should continue to develop their skills and speed before the exam.

Students are encouraged to take initiative in their own learning, and learn as much as they can independently before committing to the expense of tutoring. However, many students do benefit from the support of a tutor or the structure of a class.

Spring semester (February —June 2026): I am available for weekly private tutoring on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Summer (June — August 2026): I will be teaching some weeklong math intensives (small group- maximum 6-8 students). I will also be available for private tutoring.
