Small group: Math Classes
These math classes cover some of the most common areas of concern for students taking the SHSAT.
The Foundations classes are designed to help students who have gaps in their early math knowledge that are now resulting in slow or error-prone calculations (the SHSAT does not allow calculators). This is very common among our current middle schoolers because of how severely impacted our students’ early educations were by Covid.
The Skills classes each focus on one essential math skill that appears frequently on the SHSAT.
The Content classes each focus on one topic that is part of the middle school standards.
The Problems classes each focus on learning to approach a particular type of problem that you may see on the SHSAT.
These classes will be strictly capped at 6 students.
Foundations 1: multiples and factors
Topics covered: Multiples; Least Common Multiple; factors; Greatest Common Factor; prime numbers
Class Time and Cost: 1 hour, $30

Foundations 4: decimal calculations
Topics covered: Understanding terminating and repeating decimals; decimal place value; estimation/rounding; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing terminating decimals without a calculator; converting repeating decimals to fractions.

Foundations 2: Integers, the number line, and inequalities
Topics covered: Positive and negative integers; the number line; distance and midpoint; even, odd, consecutive; inequalities; graphing inequalities on the number line

Foundations 3: The coordinate plane
Topics covered: The coordinate plane; axes and quadrants; graphing ordered pairs on the coordinate plane

Foundations 6: Squares, square roots, exponents
Topics covered: Squares; square roots; exponents with positive base and positive exponent; negative base; zero exponent; negative exponent.
Class Time and Cost: 1.5 hours, $45

Topics covered: Understanding fractions and mixed numbers; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers without a calculator.
